Easy Bead-Woven Bracelets, Bead and Button Easy-Does-It Series -- A Book Review: How to Make Fast Beaded Jewelry
65
Bead and Button magazine has released several neat books in the
Easy-Does-It series including "Elegant Earrings", "ABCs of Beading",
"Beautiful Bridal Accessories" and more. Each book in the series is
designed to teach at least one new technique and provide several
interesting and fashionable projects to practice with. If you've ever
wanted to be able to make beautiful beaded jewelry for yourself or for
profit, these books are an excellent place to start. The projects are
quite simple, often with intricate-looking embellishments on a very
basic theme, and use many different types of beads. Some of the bracelets included are excellent for those who have small amounts of beads left over from other projects and want a great project for which to use them.
About this Book
Easy Bead-Woven Bracelets starts off with a quick tutorial on different bead-weaving stitches. The tutorial includes the brick stitch ladder, brick stitch, how to increase brick stitch, square stitch, even-count peyote, and right-angle weave. There are also instructions on how to attach crimp beads and how to make a square knot and half-hitch knot. Each tutorial is accompanied by an easy-to-read diagram illustrating the teaching.
Now, on to the bracelets! There are ten beaded bracelets in this book. Each bracelet design is accompanied by a color photograph of the item being made and illustrated or photographic step-by-step is shown on most of them. Almost all designs utilize Swarovski crystals or faceted fire-polished beads. Some of the designs look pretty complicated, but they're actually really simple to do. Note that, as with any beaded project, there is no need to follow each set of instructions to the letter. Experiment with different types and sizes of beads for an endless array of bracelets.
My Thoughts
I found this book to be quite useful; its designs are simple enough to finish in an afternoon and stylish enough to make great items for craft sales, gifts, or for your own jewelry collection. If you live in a small town like me it may be a little difficult to find some of the items needed (unless you're blessed with a REALLY good craft store!) but there are endless internet suppliers for these items. The instructions were all very easy to follow, each step is clearly numbered and explained very well. I have seen this particular book for sale on various internet sites for anywhere from $3-$10, but even on the top end of that it's still affordable and definitely worth adding to your beading library. I would suggest reading up a bit on the different kinds of seed beads available as the book doesn't mention anything about which is more desirable and why. Each design has endless color and embellishment potential, so this book won't run out of usefulness very fast!
